After reading through the various reviews and comparing prices, I’ve come to the conclusion that the Panasonic TC-P50G25-500 is the best Panasonic 50 Inch Plasma TV for your money. There are others, but they either lack features or they are still too expensive.

I mentioned in a previous post that I am a frugal shopper when it comes to electronics.  When I shop for electrioncs, particularly ones that will be the centerpiece of our family’s home theatre system, I want to find the sweet spot between features and affordibility.  In particular, if I am going to invest my hard earned money into an expensive piece of electronics, I want to be feature rich and reliable, but I don’t want to pay a premium for that.

Therefore, here is my current pick for the best Panasonic 50 Inch Plasma TV.

Panasonic VIERA TC-P50G25 50-Inch 1080p Plasma HDTV

When shopping online, particularly for expensive items such as a Panasonic 50 Inch Plasma TV, I like to study what other people are saying.  In particular, I like to read customer reviews.  A good customer review will tell you the pros as well as the cons about the product.  I read through all of the reviews that I could find online.  I will summarize a few of them below.

Most of the reviews that I read had very favorable things to say about the picture quality of the Panasonic Viera G25 series.  When buying a TV, one of the first things I select for is picture quality.  The reason for choosing plasma is the exceptional picture quality and responsiveness.  If you enjoy watching sports of fast paced movies, then plasma is definitely the way to go.  You won’t get that blury pixel delay common with LCD models.

Here is what one reviewer said about the Panasonic TC-P50G25 50 Inch Plasma TV:

“This tv is bright and colors are unmatched. Hockey games and fast paced sports are crap on lcd, but on plasma when the hockey players stop, you can see every sliver of ice fly through the air.”

“…the contrast, black level and detail are hard to imagine until you experience them. I’m even gaping at commercials, for pete’s sake.”

What customers liked:

Most of the reviews that I read were unanimous about the crisp, clear picture quality.  One reviewer said they they had a hard time going back to watching traditional tv broadcasts after experiencing the clarity of the high definition capabilities.

Earlier plasma tv models were prone to visibility problems when there was a lot of bright light in the room.  This has been fixed with the TC-P50G25.  Here is how one customer described their experience:

As far as a bright room, don’t worry! My family room is decent size, and has a cathedral ceiling with a skylight, plus a southern wall that is almost all window and a sliding door on the opposite wall. So the room has lots of light. I can watch the TV during the brightest time of day without any loss of quality or viewing ability. The anti-glare feature of the screen reduces the natural reflective characteristics of glass down to practically nil.

What customers disliked:

The most common complaint among Amazon reviewers was regarding sound quality from the built in speakers.  Some say this was corrected in later versions.  But regardless, the general consensus is that it is not a big problem.  The main reason for this is that most people have the TV hooked up to their sound system.  Therefore, the built in speakers really don’t get used very much.  But if you don’t have a home theater system, this may be something to keep in mind.

The key innovation in the Panasonic G25 series is the Infinite Black panel.

Here is Panasonic’s technical explanation of Infinite Back

“A new panel and improvements to the cell discharge area dramatically increase contrast when viewing in brightly lit locations. And reducing the electrical pre-discharge that causes graying has greatly enhanced black gradation. As a result, deep, rich blacks are displayed in virtually any viewing area, from living rooms to bedrooms. Even in dark film scenes, fine textures such as on clothing, are clearly reproduced.”

Don’t Buy A Panasonic 50 Inch Plasma TV Before You Read This

If you are in the market for a Panasonic 50 inch plasma TV, then you are probably doing a lot of research into the best models and price. I know how confusing it can be to select between the different models. You want quality. You want performance. You want to get the most for your money and have that investment last a long time. Like me, you’ve probably spent hours pouring over different makes and models. Now, you know what you want and are looking for the best model at the best price.

Like you, I’ve been very interested in buying a Panasonic 50 inch plasma TV. Why Panasonic? I’ve had very good experiences with them in the past and I like their models, features, and prices. We are upgrading from an old clunker, a 27″ inch TV which seems very small by today’s standards. After examining our living room and our entertainment center, a 50 inch model seems to be the best fit for us.

We have a fairly average living room. Our sofa sits about 7 feet from the TV which makes a 50 inch TV just about the optimal size for our room. Usualy they say with plasma HDTVs that you should multiply the width of the TV by 1.5 to 3 to determine the most comfortable viewing distance.

Why listen to me? I am a just an ordinary consumer. As an IT professional and electronics enthusiast, I’ve learned to look for sweet spots in quality and affordability. I am also very frugal by nature. I’ll pay a little bit more for good quality, but it has to make sense in terms of long term reliability. I demand high quality and features. I also demand a good price and long term reliability. I’ve spent hours pouring over the different makes and models reading through all the customer reviews.

Here are a few of my other biases that you should know about:

I am a fan of Panasonic. I’ve owned several other Panasonic products over the years and I’ve always had good expeiences.

I will not buy a TV that is not 1080p HDTV. High definition TVs have come way down in price in recent years. It doesn’t make any sense to go with anything less than full HDTV. If I’m going to jump into HDTV, I don’t what to buy a TV with traning wheels. I want the real deal.

I also favor TVs with lots of inputs. If you have any plans to buy extra components in the future, such as Blueray players, game consoles, etc, then you want to be sure you can plug them in. Multiple HDMI slots seem to be the way to go. I would also like the ability to plug in my laptop so that I can show photo slide shows and videos.

In the next post, I will reveal my pick for the best Panasonic 50 Inch Plasma TV. After going through hundreds of reviews on line, this one has the most features, the best performance, and the best price that you are likely to find.
